Gradual Panic!

For the last year or so I’ve been completely hooked on FourSquare. Now I know that revealing your location via GPS to the world for points and goodies may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I’ll have two sugars with that.

So with the release of iOS5 Apple announced its Find My Friends app. It uses GPS to triangulate your location but where with FourSquare you check into a pinned location Find My Friends broadcasts your location live. Now I’ve been wanting to test this for a while but haven’t really had the opportunity but when myself and Craig discovered that we were both going to be in the centre of Norwich today we though that we would give it a shot.

So unless you’re a Lemming like me and haven’t handed out cold hard cash to Apple for the iPhone 4S then you’re probably not enjoying the wonders of Siri, the 4S’s built in personal assistant. Without the latest handset this is the only way that you’re going to get it, but is it?

Siri has brought voice commands on mobile devices to the forefront but it’s actually been around for a while whether your an iPhone 3GS/4 or even an Android device owner. I’m talking about Vlingo.

I guess it was inevitable but I’ve taken the plunge and grabbed myself the iPhone 4S. OK so it’s not the revolutionary iPhone 5 that everyone was expecting but having muddled through the last 2 years with my 3GS this handset is an absolute dream. Come have a looksie.

So then Apple has a new iPhone. Is it a revolutionary new design? Is it a competition killer? Does it bring anything ground breaking to the table? Well the answer to all of these questions is a unfortunately a big fat NO. What we got was what I feared, a phone that looks just like the last one but a bit faster. The iPhone 4S.

So tonight is the the big iPhone announcement (6pm GMT) but I’ve got a horrible feeling that I’m going to be sorely disappointed. Obviously the rumour mills have been spinning faster than a thunderbolt port and everything points to the fact that all we’re going to be getting is the iPhone 4S a simply higher spec iPhone 4 with a better camera.

If I really got what I’m hoping for then it would be a 4-5″ device and a complete chassis redesign, obviously with the performance improvements that it looks like we’ll get with tonight’s phone that looks just like the old one.

Anyway stay tuned for all the info. It’s gonna be a long night tonight while we try to squeeze every last morsel of Appley goodness.
