Windows 8 Developer Preview

The initial release of Windows 8 was always going to cause divides, not just the Mac boys vs the the Windows boys, but the Windows boys vs their Windows brothers.

So with that I’ve nipped over to MSDN and grabbed the Developer Preview to give it a whirl. For this first look I’m running it on  an Acer Aspire One netbook with only 1GB RAM and an SSD. So let’s see what this baby can do.

WinToFlash

Ever since the dawn of the netbook and more recently Apple’s departure from physical media I’ve got used to not relying on a CD/DVD to restore my dodgy systems. So how do you reinstall an OS on a computer that won’t let you violate it with a spinning disc? With a USB stick of course.

Previous methods of making a bootable disc (especially for XP) where a tad cumbersome and time consuming. Obviously there are the more nerdy approaches such as creating bootable media using DiskPart but that’s not great for everyone. Well now there is WinToFlash, probably the easiest boot media creator out there.

As well as that you can access a number of TV services through you games console such as the PS3, XBox and Wii. But if you actually look at what each device actually offers you’ll find limitations. I’ve never been able to settle with a solution that suits me perfectly and none of the above fit the bill.

I’m after on-demand services such as BBC iPlayer, 4OD and YouTube as well as being able to surf the web and play online games but I don’t want to pay the earth. So if you want to follow my lead you’ll build your very own media centre and here’s how.

You never had it so good

Is your Windows PC driving you up the wall? Viruses, performance issues? Well you never had it so good. Check out the following video by uber-nerd Andy who has recorded himself installing Windows 1.0 and upgrading all the way to Windows 7. Personally I find it amazing that Microsoft have actually built in over 20 years on compatibility through all of its OS versions. The video also reminds us how far we’ve come and how lucky we are that we did.
